Greece was the cradle of Western civilization. More recently, it was the cradle of the eurozone debt crisis, kicking off the turmoil after revealing in February 2010 that its deficit was nearly twice as large as had been previously reported. Greece was rescued by its eurozone neighbors, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund — the so-called troika.
Now, Greece is pushing to leave the troika’s bailout program ahead of its scheduled end in 2016. The Greek economy has been mired in what many economists see as nothing less than a full-fledged depression (Greek unemployment remains at 27% after six straight years of shrinking gross domestic product, according to Eurostat). Austertiy and the troika are very unpopular.
While Samaras’s broad coalition government survived a confidence vote that he called over the weekend in an effort to shore up support, a parliamentary vote to choose a new Greek president looms in February.
If Samaras and his center-right coalition are unable to prevail in that vote, snap elections could follow.
